Language choice in bilingual German interviews โ€” Journal

When interviews switch between German and English, decide in advance which language carries your strongest evidence.

Small group discussion in a bright meeting space

Many Hamburg and Berlin employers run mixed-language interviews. Candidates who improvise the switch mid-answer often lose precision in both languages.

Assign languages by topic

Keep highly technical or highly personal career narratives in the language where your vocabulary is most precise. Use the other language for lighter rapport and company questions if needed.

Practise the switch explicitly

In rehearsal, ask your coach to change language mid-question. The skill is not translation on the fly; it is pausing, choosing, and restarting cleanly.

Clarify expectations early

If the invitation is unclear, ask which language the main panel will use. That single email often reduces anxiety more than another hour of vocabulary drilling.

CognitiveComms sessions can be held in English or German; we match the rehearsal language to the interview you are facing.
