Anchoring a salary range without sounding inflexible — Journal
How to state a compensation range in German offer talks so you stay credible when the employer pushes back.
Salary talks in Germany often happen after a verbal offer outline. Candidates who refuse to name any number can stall the process; candidates who invent a single figure with no rationale invite an immediate discount.
Separate base from package
When you open, distinguish base salary from bonus and benefits. German employers usually expect this separation. It also gives you room to move on non-cash items if base is constrained by a salary band.
Give a range with a reason
A range works when both ends are numbers you can defend. Anchor the lower end at a figure you would still accept after trade-offs, and the upper end at a figure justified by scope, location, and comparable roles you have researched — not by aspiration alone.
Practise the pause
After you state the range, stop. Filling the silence with apologies or over-explaining undermines the anchor. In coaching sessions we rehearse sitting with that pause until it feels ordinary.
Negotiation coaching at CognitiveComms focuses on this moment: the sentence, the silence, and the first response to “That is above our band.”
